Human Rights and Citizenship highlighted at ALLright(s) – Direitos para tod@s’s event

The event “Educating for rights and citizenship”, an initiative of the ALLright(s) – Direitos para tod@s, promoted by Cáritas Coimbra, took place on the February 1st, 2023, in partnership with the Group of Schools in Condeixa-a-Nova and the Leisure Activities Centres of Cáritas Coimbra.

In the event’s opening session, Avelino Santos, Chair Board of the Pedagogical Council of the Group of Schools in Condeixa-a-Nova, emphasized the importance of this type of partnership, highlighting the long-standing partnership with Cáritas Coimbra, at the level of intervention in the educational community. He also underlined that the “project represents an added value, so that from an early age our students get in touch with this reality and have the possibility to act in conformity with the aspects that should be the reason for the human being”.

Thereafter, the project’s technical team, Ana Goreti Oliveira, Elisabete Fernandes, and Vera Pinto, shared and reflected on the project’s construction path, having been presented the funding programme, partners, target groups, the different components and themes covered. There was also the opportunity to share the activities and results achieved so far. The work developed by the various teams of Cáritas Coimbra over several years was highlighted, which enabled the implementation of new social innovation projects and has contributed to the success achieved.

Challenged to take part in the table “Education, Citizenship and Development”, Aldina Esteves, Coordinator of the School no. 2 of Condeixa-a-Nova, mentioned that the project plays a key role in schools, namely in the civic training of young people, in the sense that it promotes the acquisition of skills of respect, intervention, and participation in society. She ended her intervention with a word of praise regarding the positive impact of the project, as reported by the students and teachers. Graça Figueiredo, Coordinator of the Secondary School and of the subject Citizenship and Development of the Group of Schools in Condeixa-a-Nova, reinforced the need for training in the area of developing citizenship skills, which meet the different characteristics of the younger generations, who are in a transitional phase “probably due to the evolution of our society”, which led to the creation of the student profile at the end of compulsory education. She added that these initiatives allow “to leave seeds, so that in the future we may be different”, a more inclusive and solidary society.

The ALLright(s) event aimed to promote the meeting between partners and stakeholders for a debate around the themes of the project, namely human rights, gender equality, diversity, and interculturality. It also intended to present the project to the educational community. In general, the balance was very positive, and the project team ended the session with a special thanks for the participation and collaboration of the Leisure Activities Centres’s teams from Group of schools in Condeixa-a-Nova.

ALLright(s) – Direitos para tod@s is a project funded by the Active Citizens Fund in Portugal – EEA Grants, which is operated in Portugal by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Bissaya Barreto Foundation.
