Preserving nature and promoting physical and mental well-being? “Citizeen” application tested in a Coimbra green space

Between October 26th and November 15th, the Innovation Department of Cáritas Coimbra (CDC), Our Watch Leads (OWL) and Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre – Pole at the University of Coimbra (MARE-UC) tested the Citizeen application in the Choupal National Forest, in Coimbra. The activities had the participation of 5 older adults and 5 formal caregivers of the CDC’s Rainha Santa Isabel Day Care Centre, and 4 volunteers.

This is an application developed by OWL, with CDC and MARE-UC, under the Pharaon project, which should allow citizens to register natural areas (green and blue spaces) inside cities with their characteristics, accesses, potential users, as well as their biodiversity, including photos of the spaces and other information, with the proper security and data protection measures. In addition, the application should allow citizens to report the necessary measures to ensure that the infrastructure, signs or equipment in their communities are suitable for different populations, especially for older adults.

This initiative is part of a set of actions that aim to promote the commitment to the preservation of nature inside cities as well as the physical and mental well-being of older people.
