Project that detects falls advances to the second phase in Caritas Coimbra
Cáritas Coimbra’s Nursig Home Santo António is testing the DIANA project pilot, under the scope of the AAL Programme, which consists in the installation of sensors in bedrooms and bathrooms with the purpose of detecting falls, as well as providing relevant information to prevent them.
After the first phase of tests in the participants’ bedrooms, the pilot is now moving on to the second phase with sensors also being installed in their bathrooms. This second round will last 2 months, until the end of November.
The DIANA project aims to support the caregivers’ tasks and at the same time improve the autonomy and safety of older people. In this sense, it is developing sensors that assist in monitoring the safety of older people 24 hours a day, seven days a week, thus supporting the routines and activities of daily living.
The pilot phase will also include a test of a toilet assistant (within the so-called “toilet test module”) in which, besides the sensors, voice and image devices will be tested to help people to use the toilets. This will be a test in a controlled environment and with the proper supervision of researchers and caregivers that will soon take place in a Cáritas Coimbra Day Care Centre.
