Cáritas Coimbra supports the promotion of healthy ageing at the European Week of Regions and Cities
Cáritas Coimbra, also through the SHAFE (Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments) European Network, supported the organization of a workshop dedicated to Healthy Ageing, which took place on October 9th, during the European Week of Regions and Cities, in the Square – Brussels Convention Centre (Belgium).
Under the theme “Healthy ageing in cities and regions: inspiring examples to frame the future” the workshop provided participants with examples of how to improve healthy ageing and develop cities and communities that are friendly to older citizens. The session also provided the opportunity to discuss success factors and obstacles, as well as provide recommendations to local and regional authorities.
As the ageing of Europe’s population, there is a need for action at all levels of governance to rethink the way society is organized and to create a just and sustainable society for all ages. In this way, the workshop with the partnership of Cáritas Coimbra sought to find out why some ageing policies are more successful than others, helping cities and regions to explore the potential of the older people and at the same time, overcoming some of the limitations and challenges that urban environments often present to older residents.
The European Week of Regions and Cities is an annual four-day event during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs, implement EU cohesion policy, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance.
The 2019 edition took place from 7th to 10th October, in Brussels. Developed from the initial concept, created in 2003, the event has become a European networking platform for regional and local development experts, considered the main event of EU regional policy. Per edition, it receives around 6 000 participants, including decision makers and local, regional, national and European experts.
