Cáritas Coimbra at 22nd International Long-Term Care Conference
At the invitation of the Polish company TZMO and its representative in Portugal – Talinamed, Cáritas Coimbra went to the city of Torun, in Poland, to attend the 22nd International Long-Term Care Conference, which took place from 18th to 20th September.
Pedro Rualde (Head Nurse) and José Figueiredo were representing Cáritas Coimbra at this conference, which aimed to understand people living with dementia and their needs, in order to minimize negative symptoms and improve comfort and quality of life of those who live with this pathology. In 2019, the event organized by TZMO focused on the theme “Global challenges in aging: Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia”.
In addition to participating in various presentations, more than 1000 participants from various European countries had the opportunity to visit some of the TZMO Group’s areas of intervention, such as the Clinic, Laundry and Disposable Clinical Instruments and Sterilization Unit that provide services to all the Group’s units and to external entities. They had the opportunity to interact with one of the most sophisticated units of manufacture incontinence products, in Europe (diapers, dressings, among others).
Neurological disorders can affect elder or younger people, weaker organisms or even those in good health. However, it is in the most debilitated, fragile and aging organisms that these conditions appear most often. This theme is quite complex and current, being, therefore, object of study of Cáritas Coimbra. A good example is its recent project, ReHab, which aims cognitive stimulation and functional rehabilitation of elder people through a multidimensional kit of innovative technologies and traditional materials. In addition to the project, Cáritas Coimbra has a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic with different services that include physical therapy adapted to physical as well as neurological pathologies, with professionals in the area that adapt therapeutic exercises to the needs of each person.
