Jumpair – Cáritas Coimbra embraces new project that aims to improve the quality of life of people with pressure ulcers

Pressure ulcers are a disease that affects a significant number of patients admitted to hospitals. The causes may be different, such as a consequence of chronic diseases, trauma, burns, malnutrition and even pain due to the bed structure. The development of these ulcers exposes the patient to a situation of risk that along with other diseases, prolongs the internment period, increasing financial costs and human resources.

With the objective of improving the quality of life of people with pressure ulcers, in a situation of great dependence, Cáritas Coimbra is collaborating with the JUMPAIR project consortium.

The JUMPAIR project has as main objective the development of an innovative device that combines an anti-decubitus massage system located underneath the wearer’s body. The differentiating structure of this prototype has sensors that measure body pressure, moisture and oxygenation of the skin in the affected area.

On January 17 and 18, Cáritas Coimbra was in Milan, represented by Ana Jegundo of the Innovation Department and Dr. José Moura of the Rainha Santa Isabel Centre, for the first JUMPAIR project consortium meeting.

This project is led by the Italian company Dofren, Srl under the Research and Innovation Program of the European Union – Horizon 2020, GA n. 783594 and has the participation of 3 European centres to evaluate the effectiveness of the Jumpair device in the treatment of pressure ulcers in patients with a long period of hospitalization – Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Integrata di Udine (Italy); Cáritas Coimbra (Portugal); Ospedale Humanitas di Milano (Italy).

This meeting served to enable all partners to be well acquainted with how to present their practices in the treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers in their units, as well as the challenges and opportunities that this type of study could mean for the teams involved and for the community at large. It was also announced the version of the prototype that will be used in the study, being the discussed strategy and the procedures to be adopted in order to harmonize the implementation of the study in the different countries.
