DIANA – DIGITAL INTELLIGENT ASSISTANT FOR NURSING APPLICATIONS

There are over 9.9 million new cases of dementia each year worldwide, implying one new case every 3.2 seconds. By 2018, the global cost of dementia rises above €900 billion – 80% of which are related to formal and informal care costs.

DIANA (Digital Intelligent Assistant for Nursing Applications) project aims to respond this issue, creating a new solution for optimising the nursing process by relieving nursing staff of routine tasks which could be managed by an AI-powered digital assistant.

In particular, DIANA supports nursing staff in complex tasks such:

  • monitoring patient’s safety 24/7.
  • controlling walks during the night.
  • reacting to alarms from existing sensors, preventing false alarms.
  • supporting activities of daily living.
  • observing health trends of patients and recording of such data for later assessment by clinical experts.

The DIANA project was approved in the 2019 call of the AAL program (Active Assisted Living) and is co-funded in Portugal by the FCT. The partners are, in Portugal, Cáritas Coimbra and the Portuguese Catholic University, in Austria Cogvis (Project Coordinator) and Technische Universität Wien; in Romania, the Bluepoint and in Switzerland the EET Europarts and the St. Gallen Geriatric Clinic in Switzerland. This last partner, along with Cáritas Coimbra, will implement the trials.

MAIN TASKS OF CDC IN THE PROJECT:

Cáritas Coimbra has the role of developing the Portuguese field trial, and leads the tasks related to ethics and the research of the questionnaires to be used to collect information during the project.
