MIND & GAIT
MIND & GAIT is a project funded under PT2020 (FCT – European Regional Development Funds 2017 – 2019), involving six PT partners and intends to develop a combined intervention to older adults, composed of a program of cognitive stimulation (by computer and through assisted animal therapy) and a program of physical activity. This project will “increase health and quality of life gains in a fragile population”, in addition to reducing costs in health care, as it will extend the independence of the older participants and reduce the costs of hospital admission. Caritas Coimbra is involved in requirements and pilots.
This project began in 2017 and it is developed in 3 cities in Portugal: Coimbra, Leiria and Santarém, by Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Coimbra (ESEnfC), Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra, Politécnicos de Coimbra, Leiria e Santarém and Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Alcobaça.
The expected outcomes also foresee the development of an auto block device for walkers. This device will enable older adults to walk more safely and confident.
MAIN TASKS OF CDC IN THE PROJECT:
The proposal was based and tested in real clinical practice, integrating knowledge from different scientific areas, offering a service and a network of contacts. Cáritas de Coimbra was one of the field trials sites. The pilot consisted of a practical intervention that guided health professionals, disseminated through the platform and replicated in several day centres.
